Search engine optimisation rewards patience, but it rewards timing even more. Right now, most Syrian business categories have search results that are thin, outdated, or dominated by directories rather than the businesses themselves. Type "مصنع ألمنيوم سوريا" or "شركة شحن دمشق" and see for yourself. That gap is an opportunity with an expiry date.
Why being early compounds
SEO is not a switch. A page that has ranked for a year, collected links, and been refined based on real search data is very hard for a newcomer to displace — even a newcomer with a bigger budget. The advantage accumulates:
- Age and trust. Google gives established, consistently-updated pages the benefit of the doubt.
- Link gravity. Early content gets referenced, quoted and linked. Those links keep working for years.
- Data lead. A year of Search Console data tells you exactly which queries to chase. A competitor starting today is guessing.
Start two years after everyone else and you are fighting uphill against all three.
What to claim now
Your category, nationally. One strong page for "[what you do] in Syria" — in Arabic and English, as separate URLs. Not a homepage that tries to rank for everything.
Your city. "[what you do] Damascus / Aleppo / Homs" once the national page is solid. City pages only when you have genuinely local content for them — not thin copies.
The questions your customers ask. "How much does X cost in Syria", "how to choose a Y", "is Z worth it". Answer them properly, once, on a page that stays useful. This is the content that earns links and keeps ranking.
Your brand. Make sure searching your company name returns your site, your Google Business Profile, and your real information — not a stale listing or nothing.
Arabic is where the room is
Most of the (limited) SEO effort in the market goes into English terms. Your customers search in Arabic. Proper Arabic keyword research and natural Arabic content — not translated English pages — is the single biggest under-exploited lever right now.
Make it measurable
Connect Google Search Console on day one, even before the content is good. In a month you will see which queries you already appear for on page two or three. Those are the fastest wins: improve those exact pages, track each keyword's position weekly, and treat SEO as a pipeline with a scoreboard — not a vague marketing line item.
This is the SEO work Codrex does — on sites we build and sites we did not. The best time to start was a year ago. The second best is now.
